By Lee MacRae
Gemology is the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying rocks known as
natural diamonds or
loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect
loose gemstones or
loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to travel to various neghbourhood locations to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as we reveal the various factors in gemstone collecting.
To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to learn as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the better off you'll be. You need to be as informed as possible.
Color is a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditionally, these specter colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Colors that tend to be darker or paler are considered a lower value.
How a stone is cut is the next factor to look at. How precise the cut is is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.
Another factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.
Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.
Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.

In general zircon is transparent to translucent. Impurities cause the various
color. Zircons with a cat's eye effect are known but rare. Some crystals contain
radioactive thorium and uranium. Over time, the radioactivity breaks down the
crystal structure so that such stones (usually green) tend to an amorphous
structure, with a lower refractive index and luster than the crystalline type.
These slightly radioactive zircons are very rare in the trade, but highly prized
by collectors and pose no heath threat to its wearer.

The Andamooka Opal is a famous opal which was presented to Queen Elizabeth II in
