The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many people love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first step in beginning this hobby the smart way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

First on your list to factor in is the color of the stone. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. This means blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. The prices of very dark are very pale stones are lower.

The cut of your gemstone is easily one of the most important aspects when you value gemstone. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will be inconsistent.

Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. The gemstone without flaws is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or gemstone clarity magnifier. Many hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You can collect gemstones like Chrysocolla, Amethyst (cardinal gem) or Clinohumite for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in North Carolina you can find Beryl, Aquamarine, Emerald, Almandite Garnet, Rhodolite, and Pyrope Garnet, Diamond, Cyanitecomma

The Samarian spinel is a reddish stone weighing 500 carats, blood red, semi-
polished and has a hole in it, and is the largest known spinel in the world. It
is presently at National Jewelery Museum of Iran, in Tehran, and is among the

The carat weight alone is almost meaningless unless you also consider the cut,
clarity and color of the diamond. A large diamond is not very valuable if it
lacks brilliance, purity and high-grade color. However, since larger stones are
rarer than smaller ones, diamond value rises exponentially with carat weight.
Therefore, a diamond weighing 3.0 carats, will always be worth more than three
1.0 carat stones of the same quality. No two diamonds are exactly alike, and you
must weigh all of the factors - color, cut, clarity and carat weight - when
making your diamond jewelry buying decision.
