You'll even find some that like to travel to various locations nearby or even different countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone. Larger flaws can be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.
Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Malachite, Sugilite Axinite for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Alaska you can find White Quartz and Jade.
