Latest Gemological ArticleStarting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from
loose gemstones to
natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of items like
loose gemstone or
natural diamonds. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then read along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.
At the very beginning you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
Color is a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that are darker or paler than a pure spectral color diminish the value of the stone.
Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will not reflect the light consistently. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.
Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone being considered. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Here's a suggestion -- don't think of a gem as a component of jewelry; think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can find your raw materials through field trips In the United States in Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz. And in Canada you can find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec as well as ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

The 45.52 carat steel blue Hope Diamond was found in India back in remote times
as a rough crystal weighing 112 carats. It first came to light when Jean
Baptiste Tavernier, the noted French traveler of the 17th century, was
approached in India by a slave who had a very secretive manner about him. It
turned out that he had in his possession an intriguing steel blue stone which at
first look seemed to be a large sapphire, but the well-experienced Tavernier
soon realized it was a diamond the largest deep blue diamond in the world.
