So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. This article will discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones become higher in value when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the farther they are from the natural color.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but you're gemstones as well. A precision cut gemstone highlights the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way to determine the precision in the cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light throughout the surface of the stone. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Next to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Garnet, Sugilite Bixbite (Red beryl) and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the United States. In Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They become interested in collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds. Some people even begin to visit different local areas to look for raw gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you then read along as this article discusses the various factors in gemstone collecting.

First off you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones become higher in value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They drop in value the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut gemstone showcases the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in the cut is to look at how well and consistent it reflects light throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting internally. Gem color appears washed out.

The clarity in a stone is our next factor. When we talk of clarity it relates to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. The gemstone without flaws is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will get a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the difference in specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. And in Canada you can find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or labradorite on the adjacent islands and coastal area of Labrador and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

First on your list to look at is gemstone color. You want the gemstone to be as close in color as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices for very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious gemstones are less per carat.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but you're gemstones as well. A good cut showcases the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in the cut of the stone is to consider how consistently it reflects the light throughout the surface of the stone. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.

Another factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This refers to the stones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Dease Lake, British Columbia or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario along with iolite from Manitouwadge, Ontario. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

Great Sapphire of Louis XIV, is a 135.8 carat (27.16 g) blue sapphire nearly

Francesco Maria Ruspoli in the 17th century. By 1691, King Louis XIV possessed
the gemstone and placed it in the French Crown Jewels. It was confiscated by the

The Diamond is the birthstone of April and the anniversary gemstone for the 10th
and 60th years of marriage. Diamonds were discovered in India in 500 B.C., and
the name "diamond" comes from the Greek word "Adamas" which means unconquerable
- suggesting the eternity of love. Since ancient Greece, diamonds and diamond
jewelry have been the traditional symbol of love, and the ancients believed they
were hardened dew drops, splinters from the stars or crystallized lightning. A
diamond is the hardest substance known to humankind, and is made of a
crystallized carbon that has unique powers of light reflection. Since diamonds
are composed of a single element, they are the purest of all gemstones.

Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They drop in value when they are lighter or darker than the natural color.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Weighing 138.7 carats, the Rosser Reeves Ruby is one of the world's largest and
finest star rubies. This Sri Lankan stone is renowned for its great color and
well-defined star pattern. Advertising mogul Rosser Reeves, who donated the
piece to the Smithsonian in 1965, carried it around as a lucky stone, referring
to it as his baby. He often stated that he had acquired the stone at an auction
in Istanbul in the mid-1950s. He actually bought the stone from Robert C. Nelson
Jr. of New York who was acting on behalf of Firestone & Parson of Boston.
Firestone & Parson were selling the stone for Mr. Paul Fisher of New York. Mr.
Robert Fisher, Paul's father, had bought the ruby at an auction in London in
1953. At the time the ruby then weighed just over 140 carats, but was very
heavily scratched, and a few carats were removed in the repolishing. The
repolishing also helped to center the stone's star. Articles in the New York
World-Telegram and The Sun in 1953 mentioned this fabulous gemstone.
