How To Collect Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as
natural diamonds or
loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of items like
loose gemstone or
natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different local areas to look for rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this hobby interest you then read along as this article discusses the in and outs of gemstone collecting.
The very first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the smart way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will prevent you from making mistakes at the start.
First, color is a major part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Remember that the spectral colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Gemstones colors that are paler or darker than the pure spectral color diminish the value of the stone.
Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will showcase the gemstone's color, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent way to determine the excellence in the cut is to look at how well it reflects light on a consistent basis over the stones complete surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.
Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Any large flaws are visible to the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.
You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Agate, Spinel or Kornerupine for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite.

it was believed that the owner of the stone could use it to harness psychic
powers. It was, and still is, the choice of high church officials and regents
especially when their rings are mounted. There are several language origins for
the word "sapphire." In Sanskrit it was known as "sauriratna" in honor of the
planet Saturn. Ancient Chaldean references called it "sampir," while the Greeks
had a modern translation, "sappheiros" which denoted the color blue. The Arabic
translation was "safir" and the Latin texts call it "saphirus."
