Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close in pureness to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are muted or are too dark can lower the value.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut will highlight the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way of determining the excellence of the cut of the stone is to consider if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. The gem appears washed out.

The clarity of a gemstone is an important consideration. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will employ a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to take vacations to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Minnesota you can hunt for Agate and Thomsonite. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.

"Green amethyst" is a misnomer since the term "amethyst" applies only to the
purple variety of quartz. However, that doesn't stop the marketing of these less
valuable pale amethyst stones after irradiation and/or heat treatments turn the
color green. Properly, after treatment, this stone should be marketed as
Prasiolite or Green Quartz, not green amethyst, and it should not be marketed as
"rare" since there is an abundance of pale lavender quartz which can be treated
to produce a light spring green stone.

Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many people love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

First off you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher they closer they are to natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They drop in value the more they deviate from the spectral color.

How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to look at before a purchase is made. The precision of cut will determine how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.

Next to look at is gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone being considered. Larger flaws are visible to the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

The next factors to consider our size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby would weigh 1.20 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Cry Lake, British Columbia or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario and even Ammolite, a rare gemstone found only in southern Alberta. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.
