So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to travel to various locations nearby or even different countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we reveal the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what to look for.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They become less valuable when they are lighter or darker than the spectral color.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important factor to look at before a purchase. The preciseness of the cut will determine how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone. Larger flaws can be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Malachite, Sugilite Axinite for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Alaska you can find White Quartz and Jade.

The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the smart way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can locate all you need to know about the subject that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditionally, these specter colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Colors that are paler or darker are considered a lower value.

The cut of the gemstone is an important aspect to consider when you value gemstone. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect the light consistently. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will never be consistent.

Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may have the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Diamond, Topaz or Axinite and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Utah You can find Topaz, Garnet, Petrified Wood, Jasper and Obsidian.
