How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit various locations close by or possibly even in other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as we reveal the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

The very first step in beginning this hobby the right way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

Number one to look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the purest spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value.

The cut of the gemstone is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase is made. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.

Our next consideration is the aspect of clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Normally large flaws can be seen with the naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Collecting gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Emerald, Chalcedony (bloodstone) or Kornerupine for example. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Just in the United States in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral.

Microcrystalline opals are made up of a microcrystalline material which is a
crystallized substance or rock which contains small crystals that are visible
only through microscopic examination. These opals are broken into two categories
: Opal-CT is where a predominant mineral rich layer is present within the opal
layers. They are all genuine minerals that formed from evaporating water with
low amounts of soluble silica. They are not Opal-A because the A type of opals
thrived during dry spells with very little water input.

The Diamond is the birthstone of April and the anniversary gemstone for the 10th
and 60th years of marriage. Diamonds were discovered in India in 500 B.C., and
the name "diamond" comes from the Greek word "Adamas" which means unconquerable
- suggesting the eternity of love. Since ancient Greece, diamonds and diamond
jewelry have been the traditional symbol of love, and the ancients believed they
were hardened dew drops, splinters from the stars or crystallized lightning. A
diamond is the hardest substance known to humankind, and is made of a
crystallized carbon that has unique powers of light reflection. Since diamonds
are composed of a single element, they are the purest of all gemstones.

A style of cut found in gemstone jewelry are cabochons. Cabochon cuts are widely
used for gemstones that are 1) of lower clarity and therefore will not reflect
much light. And/or 2) are of exceptional color and/or 3) are opaque in nature (
such as opal or onyx) and or 4) have special optical properties or inclusions
that are best displayed in cabochons (e.g. cats eye or star ruby) 5) are too
soft to be cut in facets (moonstone, opal)

Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then read along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.

At the very beginning you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

Color is a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that are darker or paler than a pure spectral color diminish the value of the stone.

Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will not reflect the light consistently. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone being considered. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Here's a suggestion -- don't think of a gem as a component of jewelry; think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can find your raw materials through field trips In the United States in Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz. And in Canada you can find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec as well as ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

The 45.52 carat steel blue Hope Diamond was found in India back in remote times
