Why would someone go to the trouble of collect
loose gemstones? Well for one thing gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their higher counterpart,
natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting
loose gemstones.
The first step in becoming a gemstone collector the wise way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you can find everything you need to know that will make you an informed buyer.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones are valued much higher when they equal the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less when they are lighter or darker than the pure natural color.
The cut of the gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with an improper cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. Color tone, saturation, and hue will always appear inconsistent
Our next consideration is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Next comes size and weight. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.
Collecting gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Chrysocolla, Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Zircon for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In New Mexico you'll find Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Rock Crystal and Obsidian

Gemstone Scene ArticleHow To Collect Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why would anyone collect items like
loose gemstones, you ask? For many people it's because gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like
natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many in this hobby love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. Read long as we look at the hobby of collecting
loose gemstones.
First off you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.
One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or too dark are diminished in value.
The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones in general as well. An excellent cut will showcase the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way to determine the precision of the cut is to look at how well it reflects light on a consistent basis throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting internally. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.
Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This means the purity of the stone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Needless to say, stones with no flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.
You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.
Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go looking for gemstones. Just in the United States in Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the quartz regions in Cloncurry in Queensland, Australia.

Colorless and near-colorless diamonds are the most valuable. Though most
diamonds may appear colorless to the naked eye, the majority of diamonds contain
slight traces of yellow or light brown when viewed under a jeweler's loupe.
Depending on the stone's size, a single increase in color grade can boost the
value of a diamond by thousands of dollars per carat. A traditional engagement
diamond is usually colorless or near-colorless.

Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why collect
loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart,
natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we examine the
loose gemstones hobby.
The very first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the smart way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can locate all you need to know about the subject that will prevent you from making mistakes at the start.
Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Top grade gemstones have pure colors there as close as possible to the exact spectral color of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark are diminished in value.
Gemstone cut is one of the most important traits when evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Color tone, saturation, and hue will be inconsistent.
Another factor to look at is the stone's clarity. This means the stones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.
Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is such a variety in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Chrysocolla, Opal (Girasol) or Tourmaline for instance. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. For example in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras
