Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They collect and evaluate items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby or in other countries to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we reveal the various factors in gemstone collecting.

First off you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

The chief thing you need to look at will be the color of the stone. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices of very dark are very pale precious and semi precious gemstones are lower.

How a stone has been cut is the second most important factor to look at. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A perfect gemstone is obviously worth more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a 10X gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will employ an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Here's a suggestion -- don't think of a gem as a component of jewelry; consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Arkansas you can find Clear & Smoky Quartz, Diamond and Agate. And if you travel to Canada you will find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or Tourmaline from Chatham Twonship, Quebec as well as black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to learn as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you know about gemstones the better off you'll be. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible to the exact spectral color of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or too dark lowers the value per carat.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut gemstone highlights the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way of determining the excellence in gemstone cut is to consider how evenly it reflects light over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. The gem appears washed out.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next to consider are weight and size. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or hunt the sapphire fields in Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire, Glenalva, The Willows, Inverell or Glen Innes in Queensland, Austalia.

The carat weight alone is almost meaningless unless you also consider the cut,
clarity and color of the diamond. A large diamond is not very valuable if it
lacks brilliance, purity and high-grade color. However, since larger stones are
rarer than smaller ones, diamond value rises exponentially with carat weight.
Therefore, a diamond weighing 3.0 carats, will always be worth more than three
1.0 carat stones of the same quality. No two diamonds are exactly alike, and you
must weigh all of the factors - color, cut, clarity and carat weight - when
making your diamond jewelry buying decision.
